“It was awesome,” Wyatt Carlson tells PEOPLE of bride Emma Lihs’ proposal
An Iowa high school student thought of a moo-ving way to propose to her boyfriend prom.
Late last month, Emma Lihs, a junior at Bondurant-Farrar, asked her boyfriend Wyatt Carlson, a senior at Dowling Catholic, to the annual event by writing “prom?” by the side of his cow.
“It was awesome,” Carlson tells PEOPLE of Lihs’ creative proposal. “I live in the city, but I’ve always loved farming and ranching, and she knew it.”
“I was shocked to say the least. It was great and of course I said yes,” he adds. “Having a cow in your front yard is quite unusual, but always welcome.”

According to Lihs, coming up with the idea of writing “prom?” in white chalk on the side of his beloved animal cow – named Fern – was an apology.
“I saw a poster idea on social media and decided it needed a cow to create the big gesture,” he says.
“You can tell Fern and I share Wyatt. I’m pretty sure she likes him more than me. He was totally on board with getting dressed up to surprise our boyfriend,” Lihs added jokingly.
Carlson later returned the favor to his girlfriend a short time later when he brought a horse to her house to ask her to the dance at her school, displaying a sign that read: “I’m not a horse at this time, join this cowboy at the dance.” !”
When the couple’s events take place later this month, Carlson tells PEOPLE that he will wear a navy blue tuxedo with black accents and a bow tie to Lihs’ prom, while she will wear a sparkly red dress with heels black
During Lihs prom, she will then wear a sparkly black dress and cheetah print heels, while Carlson will wear all black with a cheetah print sport coat.
