‘I don’t think there is a good solution here’

Nothing says summer like the neighborhood kids enjoying a bike ride. But for one HOA-governed community, that view could disappear.

A frustrated resident took to the subreddit r/HOA asking advice how to deal with neighbors who complain about kids on bikes.

“[My condo complex] it is mostly occupied by retirees… Children are generally ignorant and do not look at the cars coming back. Many neighbors are suffering the effects of their age and worry about hitting a child while walking back out of their seats. They are asking us to ban bicycles (and scooters, skateboards, etc.)… Thoughts?”

Commenters were angry and perplexed. “So I am [they] Do you just want to ban everything with wheels, unless it’s a vehicle?” he asked.

“I don’t think there’s a good solution here,” he said another one. “Banning bikes, skates, skateboards, scooters, etc. will get tons of complaints… I just suggest telling parents/grandparents to teach kids about traffic, and old people should just drive more carefully”.

“If you literally can’t stop yourself from hitting kids, you shouldn’t be allowed to drive!” another one ventilated.

Others pointed to the practical arguments against a bicycle ban.

“Discouraging or forbidding children to play outside riding bicycles and scooters sets a bad example. It will also make the community less desirable to potential buyers,” one person. he wrote.

Riding a bicycle has been shown to enhance both physical and mental health in children. Outdoor play is also crucial for development: Children who play outside are happier, more focused and less anxious than those who spend most of their days inside.

Ironically, HOAs are not known for the policies that make their communities attractive to buyers. Today, prospective home buyers are becoming more and more considerate environmental impact of his purchases, with 60% of millennials willing to pay more for sustainable housing. However, the HOAs have been repeatedly captured enforce anti-environmental policies.

From the mandate of water-guzzling grass lawn to eliminate beneficial home gardens and forbid laundry lines and solar panelsHOAs have gained a reputation as opposed to eco-friendly.

When it comes to transportation, fewer choices can reduce a person’s pollution footprint than choosing ride a bike instead of driving. In fact, cycling instead of driving once a day can reduce a person’s commute the contamination from 67%. I hope this HOA don’t give in to community pressure.
