Durham students walk, bike to school despite cold, wet morning

DURHAM, NC (WNCN) – The weather took a toll on hundreds of Durham elementary school students walking and biking to school.

About 300 students at Eastway Elementary started their day by walking or biking to school as part of Durham Public Schools’ “Walk, Bike and Roll to School” event.

They started going to school a little earlier than expected to beat the rain and the drop in temperatures, especially with some children not even wearing jackets.

“We’re making it up as we go. That’s what we do in elementary school, we make it work and make it happen,” said John Guffey, Eastway’s assistant principal.

Rodrika Hall joined her son for his trip to school on Tuesday morning. She made sure they were properly dressed for it.

“Just trying to get there as fast as possible before the rain came down and we did, we didn’t get wet,” Hall said.

The Durham police were involved in the event, guiding the students and reinforcing safety measures such as the importance of using crosswalks and following traffic rules.
