3 seriously injured Monday afternoon in 6-vehicle crash in Garden City

GARDEN CITY, Kan. (WIBW) – Three people were hospitalized with serious injuries after a six-vehicle crash Monday afternoon in Garden City, authorities said.

The collision was reported at 1:20 pm Monday at Kansas Avenue and Center Street in downtown Garden City.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, which was the investigating agency, a 1998 Ford Mustang was traveling east on Kansas Avenue at a high rate of speed when it ran a red light and struck a 2014 Nissan Versa, which was northbound. on Center Street.

After the crash, the Mustang struck the front of a 2014 Ford Focus, which was westbound on Kansas Avenue in the left lane.

The patrol said the Focus hit a 2014 Ford Fusion, which was westbound in the right lane of Kansas Avenue.

The Mustang also struck a 2015 GMC Canyon, which in turn struck a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze. Both the GMC and the Chevrolet were westbound on Kansas Avenue.

The patrol said the Mustang then rolled and came to rest facing south in the eastbound lanes of Kansas Avenue.

The driver of the Mustang, Israel Rios, 18, of Garden City, was transported to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita with serious injuries. The patrol said Rios was not wearing a seat belt. The patrol’s crash log stated there were two juveniles in the Mustang, but information about their conditions has not been released.

The driver of the Nissan, Maria Del Rosario Torres, 72, of Garden City, was transported to St. Catherine’s Hospital in Garden City for treatment of serious injuries. The patrol said Torres was wearing a seat belt.

A passenger in the Nissan, Laura Torres, 37, of Garden City, was taken to St. Catherine Hospital for treatment of suspected minor injuries. The patrol said she was wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the Focus, Maria Venegas-Ornelas, 59, of Garden City, was transported to St. Catherine Hospital for treatment of suspected minor injuries. The patrol said Venegas-Ornelas was wearing his seat belt.

A juvenile was in the Focus, but additional details about that individual were not included in the patrol’s crash log.

The driver of the Fusion, Alec Jacob Erskin, 19, of Garden City, was reported uninjured. The patrol said Erskin was wearing a seat belt. A juvenile was also in the Fusion, but the patrol did not release details about that person’s condition.

The driver of the GMC, Yvonne Guadalupe Baltazar, 22, of Garden City, was transported to St. Catherine Hospital with suspected minor injuries. The patrol said Baltazar was wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the Cruze, Isabel Quintana, 75, of Garden City, was taken to St. Catherine with serious injuries. The patrol said Quintana was wearing his seat belt.
