Vets Pets opens new expanded facility for Points East Veterinary Specialty Hospital

Vets Pets, a North Carolina cooperative network of veterinary hospitals, has opened a newly constructed 17,000 sq ft facility for Points East Veterinary Specialty Hospital. It was designed with pets, customers and team members in mind.

“We designed our facility with our incredible team in mind,” said Steve Thomas, CEO of Vets Pets.1 “With its expansive natural light, comfortable break areas and private office spaces, we are poised to attract top-tier veterinary professionals to Eastern NC.”

According to a company release,1 The building is a 4-minute drive from the previous location with regional access for a variety of pet owners from an exit from the intersection of I-95 and the future I-587.

The facility also now has a surgery suite to offer treatment for vertebral and spinal injuries, which previously had to be referred to other hospitals. In addition, Points East has expanded its Isolation Unit, to now provide ICU-level treatment for more pets suffering from infectious diseases. They plan to add CT imaging to their diagnostics and will serve as the first veterinary clinic east of Raleigh with this capability for dogs and cats.

The Points East facility has room to expand in the future with additional specialists and services and continues its close relationship with the general practices it has worked with in the past.

“We believe that the success of healthcare, both human and veterinary, depends on a cohesive team approach,” said Paige Harrington, DVM, vice president of medical leadership at Vets Pets. “We are more than just a hospital; we are a community partner, always flexible, ensuring a broad spectrum of care suitable for the animals of our community.”

Points East was developed by Frank Batten, DVM, in 2006 in a 2,500 sq ft industrial complex formerly known as Eastern Carolina Veterinary Emergency Treatment Services (ECVETS).1 In 2006, Batten co-founded Vets Pets with his son-in-law and now CEO Steve Thomas.1.2 ECVETS was one of the 2 founding practices of Vets Pets. In 2010, Vets Pets purchased and renovated a vacant 5,100 sq ft restaurant and moved ECVETS to its current location. In 2015, Vets Pets renovated the facility, added specialized surgical services, and that was the creation of Points East. In 2019, Vets Pets renovated the facility again and expanded it into a 24/7/365 emergency and critical care facility and rebranded all services under the Points East name.1

“Immediately after the conversion to a 24-hour specialized hospital, we began to feel the limited space,” Thomas said in the release. “We therefore began to plan this new facility on a nearby site that we acquired for this purpose 15 years ago in the hope that one day we will recognize this dream and the potential.”
