Stick House, Brick Garden is a Brooklyn rowhouse

Combining materials and geographical references, Stick House, Brick Garden by Abruzzo Bodziak Architects is a family home for a British family in Brooklyn. The project, a renovation of a typical historic Greenpoint timber-framed cottage, uses New York and London references to update the residence, transforming it into a contemporary timber structure set on a sturdy brick foundation.

“The house and the garden are simultaneously lush and generous while defined by an economy of means in form and material – the simple geometries of the design allow the owners’ talents in the garden and personal effects to define the experience of life,” says ABA. partner Emily Abruzzo, who leads the practice with co-founder Gerald Bodziak.

Created to accommodate the lives and passions of the clients, the interior of the house has been “remixed” and transformed into a modern, minimalist architecture space Ten-foot tall double-hung windows bathe the living spaces in light and help define the home’s exterior character.

The masonry base of the structure transitions into wood as the eye travels upwards – still surrounded by lush green plantings and flowers that showcase the gardening skills of the owners. The resistant materials used make sense in the environment of the building, located near the East River, while extending to a leafy English garden.

Inside, balancing spaces for privacy and socialization, Stick House, Brick Garden presents a large open living space, as well as a series of smaller and cozy rooms for its residents – dormitories or work areas. Perfect connection to the outside, “at the garden level, another large room designed to relax and listen to music spreads out on the back terrace”, write the architects.
