Saratoga Springs bike lane, sidewalk project near track complete

SARATOGA SPRINGS – The $5.7 million new sidewalk and bike lane project on Union Avenue near Saratoga Race Course is complete.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the completion ahead of schedule Tuesday, noting that the new bike and pedestrian areas will increase safety and help meet the state Department of Transportation’s “complete streets” goals.

“The city of Saratoga Springs is one of upstate New York’s must-see destinations and with these improvements we’ve made it easier for residents and visitors to discover its many charms without having to drive,” Hochul said in a statement. . “By expanding access for bicyclists and pedestrians throughout New York State, we can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions while also promoting healthier modes of travel and increasing recreational opportunities and tourism, which benefit all of us.”

The new sidewalk on the north side of Union Avenue complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act. It runs between Polk Avenue and East Avenue, near Gate 16 of the track. The bike lanes, which are 5 feet wide, have been painted in both directions between East Avenue and Henning Road.

A roughly 3-mile stretch of Union Avenue between East Avenue and the bridge over Saratoga Lake was also repaved with a stormwater drain installed between East Avenue and Henning Road.
