Poor travel expected as solid shot of snow, high winds hit Newfoundland

The system is a fast movement that will last for about 12 hours, so it will be short but intense. And, snowfall rates could approach 5 cm per hour briefly early Sunday morning, creating blizzard conditions.

Wind gusts of 80-100 km/h on the Avalon Peninsula created zero visibility during the heavy snowfall, making travel difficult or nearly impossible Sunday morning.

ATTENTION: Piles of snow could lead to very expensive problems that you didn’t see coming

Heaviest snow looks set to impact the Avalon, Burin and Bonavista peninsulas once again with 10-25cm forecast. Fortunately for Gander, the snowfall will be rather light on Sunday, with about 5 cm of snow.

Gusty winds will continue across eastern Newfoundland even after the snow stops, with blustery conditions lingering through the rest of Sunday.

Looking ahead, forecasters expect unseasonably low conditions to persist across the region into early next week.

An active pattern is expected to return to the region for the second half of next week, which could bring the risk for another significant storm or two.
