Phoenix couple claims pet sitter was drunk on job when dogs ran out of house

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) – Brooke Gambino and Mohammad Kabiri give a Rover pet sitter a bad review after claiming she was drunk while watching their two dogs, Bernard and Gustavo, during a 10-day trip in December.

“The dogs have been an emotional support in these last few years that have just been tough, and they really are such a special part of our family,” Gambino said. The couple said they found the sitter through it The Rover app. We were told she had good reviews and her profile showed she had years of experience. They said a test with the sitter in November went well.

However, during their trip from December 14 to Christmas Day, they said the sitter was sending pictures of a random dog and his messages didn’t make sense. That’s when Gambino and Kabiri meet a friend to check things out. “She stops by and says your dogs are alive, but your house is really messy, and she (the sitter) looks like she’s out,” Gambino said.

When the couple returned home, they were shocked. “Our house was a disaster. And we were like, things are weird,” Gambino said.

Gambino showed the Arizona family photos of the dirty cover, a stained wooden table, and items left behind that included a container of vape juice, Airpods and random car keys. That’s when they decided to watch their security cameras. “The 17th. Everything like falling on the 17th,” Gambino said.

Surveillance video shows Bernard and Gustavo running around. Gambino said the sitter made little or no effort to retrieve the dogs. Another video shows dogs barking at a neighbor with the sitter standing nearby.

Gambino also shared a video of a man, believed to be the sitter’s boyfriend, coming out of the house and saying, “What did you do?”

The dogs eventually found their way back home and were brought home. The sitter is seen in a separate video tripping over the front steps of the house before falling and struggling to get back up. Gambino and Kabiri believe he was drunk and say they found alcohol bottle caps in his house. “Well, if you weren’t sober enough to take care of our dogs, then that’s a problem,” Gambino said.

Gambino said the sitter claimed he needed to go to a hospital for a kidney infection and admitted to drinking alcohol for the holidays. However, they said the sitter believes there is no problem as the dogs are fine.

Gambino and Kabiri don’t plan to use the Rover app and hope the company improves its verification process. They advise other pet owners to be extremely careful when booking a sitter.
