Hawaiian Airlines Inspires “Travel Pono” On Maui And Debuts Stunning New Leihoku Suites

If you are looking for a special place for a vacation, honeymoon or business conference, you may just want to consider it Maui in 2024. Always a spectacular destination, there is a reason for the saying “Maui No Ka Oi”, which means “Maui is the best”.

Of course, people all over the world know about the devastation that was done on Maui by the fires of August 8 that destroyed the city of Lahaina (and parts of Upcountry Kula) and immediately the surrounding areas in the island Hundreds of people lost their lives, and almost everyone who lives in that area lost their homes and shelters. Historic landmarks that had been in Lahaina for a hundred years or more were destroyed, and billions of dollars in damage was done to both residences and businesses. But luckily, many areas, like the luxury resorts in Kapalua and Wailea, were intact — and welcoming travelers with warm aloha. Despite the August tragedy, Maui is open for tourism.

How do you get there, if you’re really thinking about Maui this year? You may want to consider flying on the islands’ flagship carrier: Hawaiian Airlines (which recently partnered with Alaska Airlines). For starters, consumer surveys from Condé Nast Traveler and TripAdvisor placed Hawaiian Airlines among the top of all domestic airlines serving Hawaii. The carrier was named Hawaii’s best employer Forbes in 2022 and culminated Travel + Leisure The best list of the world as the first US airline for the last two years.

But there are two more distinctive reasons.

Probably most importantly, Hawaiian Airlines made great efforts to help the island of Maui responsibly recover from the disaster. Since the tragic Aug. 8 fires in Lāhainā, Hawaiian Airlines has remained steadfast in supporting the recovery needs of the West Maui community. The carrier’s Mālama Maui Desk — its special operation created to assist in Maui’s recovery efforts — has been a pillar in the airline’s ongoing response, helping to manage a consistent flow of calls for kōkō (help).

Hawaiian Airlines (which recently merged with Alaska Airlines) established the Mālama Maui Desk in August. 15 as part of his second phase of support to Maui, alongside significant volunteer commitments and donations to local nonprofits. Since its inception, the program has assisted more than 230 individuals and organizations with urgent, high-impact requests for support related to travel, cargo transportation, baggage waivers, volunteering, sponsorships and more. This included delivering nearly 19,000 pounds of donations to West Maui, answering hundreds of calls for kōkau.

These efforts overlap with an already existing Hawaiian Airlines program to encourage responsible tourism in Hawaii, calledTravel Pono. Travel Pono means exploring with care, offering your kokua to preserve Hawaii’s natural resources, cultures and communities. Special videos created specifically to promote this important message of acting responsibly while achieving a deeper connection to Hawaii are played on the seatback video screens at takeoff and landing on every Hawaiian Airlines flight. “Volunteering” activities are encouraged, such as helping to clean up a beach, planting seedlings for new trees and vegetation, or volunteering at the Friends of Haleakala National Park, helping to remove invasive/destructive species ; or helping out at the Maui Food Bank, packing food in the warehouse or even offering a helping hand in their administrative offices. There are a wealth of different “volunteer” opportunities in Hawaii, and they are all very easily outlined on the special Hawaiian Airlines web page:

Requests for West Maui relief assistance will now be accepted through Hawaiian Team Kōkua Donation Program.

And here is the second reason.

This year, Hawaiian Airlines offers residents and mainlanders an even higher standard of leisure travel experience on its planes, as it has ordered 12 new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, the first of which is scheduled for be in service at the beginning of 2024. The interior of this plane really sounds like a dream, inspired by the first Polynesian voyages, with comfort throughout the plane. Guests will be immersed in cabin design elements that evoke Hawai’i’s rich natural world through bold textures, sunrise and sunset lighting and sinuous ocean and wind patterns.

Importantly, the 300-seat 787 Dreamliner features a new premium class of service – the Leihōkū Suites: 34 suites that envelop guests in a quiet and elegant space with fully reclining seats, an 18-inch in-flight entertainment screen, personal. outlets, wireless charging and direct access to the corridor. Located in a 1-2-1 configuration with doors, the suites can offer privacy or a shared experience, with combined double seats that allow couples to sleep while gazing at a starry ceiling, as “Leihoku” means “Garland of Stars” . “The combination of our evocative cabin design and unparalleled service will make our 787 the most relaxing and enjoyable choice for travel to and from Hawaii,” commented Avi Mannis, Hawaiian Airlines’ chief marketing and communications officer.

In developing its Leihōkū Suites, Hawaiian has become the first airline to partner with Adient Aerospace – a joint venture between the Boeing Company and Adient, a world leader in automotive seats. “It was evident from the start that Hawaiian Airlines is very passionate about its culture and brand, and making sure that came through in the design language and passenger experience,” said Tony Guy, CEO of Adient. Aerospace. “It is so rewarding to bring this collaborative vision to life and see it realized in the delivered product.”

The wind and waves that shaped the Hawaiian archipelago are expressed through curved shapes throughout the entrance and cabin. Every design element of Hawaiian’s 787 thoughtfully celebrates the Polynesian navigators who sailed the Pacific observing the stars, sun, winds, waves and wildlife. The airline worked with design consultant Teague to realize Hawaiian’s vision of honoring Pacific navigation in a modern aircraft.

As for us, we returned from Maui to Los Angeles as part of our recent reporting on recovery efforts in Maui. While we haven’t had a chance to review Hawaiian’s premium class service, we did book in their “Comfort Plus” class. Most airlines offer this “more comfortable” option above the basic Economy class, and almost all carriers disappoint: Maybe an inch more pitch backset, and a roughly equal goodbye (an inch or more) in width of the seat. To be honest, we expected the same or similar changes with our selection of “Comfort Plus”. I’m happy to say I was wrong: Hawaiian’s Comfort Plus offered a significantly wider seat (perhaps 2 ½” wider than basic Economy), plus a seatback pitch of at least the same, maybe 3″. Additional legroom was an equal surprise, and overall, our experience was a pleasure – far superior to the “enhanced” version of most domestic airlines’ service.

In other words, prepare to relax and luxuriate – no matter what class you fly in.
