Garden calendar | For the week of Jan. 14

The online class on vegetable gardening begins in January. 18: Help keep your vegetable garden thriving! Classes are suitable for new gardeners as well as more experienced gardeners. Visit the Dane County Extension website at https://dane.extension.wisc.edu/ and type “Green Thumb” to find out and register for our series of nine classes in early January. 18.

You can purchase the series of classes for a package price or purchase selected classes. Topics range from starting seeds, to tips for growing different crops to diseases and insects, composting, cover crops and more! Seed-starting season begins in March for most crops, so it’s a good time to learn the process.

Free online class on sponge moth: If your trees had problems with spongy moth last year, come to this free online class to learn management techniques. Winter is the best season to have your tree treated for sponge moth egg masses if present.

The egg masses are light beige and spongy in texture. They can be anywhere on the trunk or branches. Each mass can contain an average of 600 eggs, so treating or removing them before they disappear is a very effective management method. The class is from 3 to 4 p.m. 17 and is hosted by Tree Canopy Collaborative and Dane County Extension.
