5 malware mistakes most people make

The airports? crazy The weather? Unpredictable. The journey is hard enough… and then your phone dies. Those charging kiosks at airports, hotels and malls can be a big time saver. Their owners promise they’re safe, but the FBI disagrees — and neither do I.

Welcome to the new phase of sugar. The phenomenon has been going on for more than ten years. Hackers use public mobile charging to load malware onto your devices. Then, they ransom your phone or steal your passwords.

Don’t be afraid. When your batteries reach their lowest point on your travels, follow these rules to keep you and your family malware-free.

Do not use public USBs – only outlets

Fortunately, actual cases of juice-jacking are rare or non-existent in America. But they can it happens via USB connection. How can you avoid malware? If a kiosk has an actual power outlet to charge your phone with your adapter, there is no fear of hacking.

For 100% protection, stay away from USB ports of any size, especially when traveling overseas. While USB standards are international, foreign hackers can target popular USB ports in hotel rooms to steal data, even if you don’t use a kiosk.

Don’t use a cable at all

Keep with the Komandonians and use wireless charging pads instead of USB when possible. More and more public kiosks use wireless charging. This method does not exchange data directly with your phone, so by default it is virus free.

Do not use a data cable

If you’re desperate for juice, use a secure USB connection with the right cable. Package a charging cable only for your trip. They are cheap, compact and do not allow data transfer. Come to think of it, it’s more of a “do”.

Do not select the “trust” option.

Newer phones are smart enough to be wary of an unknown USB connection. (Some humans might learn a thing or two). They will ask if you want to “trust this device” or “share data”.

Always say “No” to these options when traveling! Both allow data communication between your phone and the charging hardware, which may have implanted malware. Choose the “only for upload” option. If it is not available, keep walking.

FYI: This works with most phones that are a few years old or newer. It may not offer the choice if you have a particularly old phone.

Don’t forget your external battery

They are slim and durable, and you will never regret packing them. Leave yours external battery in a side pocket of the suitcase or in a laptop bag and keep it nearby. Just remember to top it up when you stop at a hotel or airport, and you’re good to go.

Going on a big trip?

I really, really suggest checking my recommendations for international charging adapters before leaving, like mine travel preparation sheets. Now you’re ready to travel in style and stay safe!
