Imagine this: It’s Christmas and you end up with a little pet like this under your tree with a note that says it’s for you… Exciting, right? But once the reality sets in, there is a lot to take care of an animal, some may not be ready for the responsibility. So, if you’ve ended up with a pet this holiday season, here’s what you can do to make sure they’re taken care of going forward.
It all starts with the essentials that Cathy Guinane – trainer at Nebraska Humane Society knows all about.
“Like bowls and leashes and collars and a kennel, some blankets, you know some of these necessities that a dog should have.”
And like humans, animals need routine.
“They just need to know when they’re going to eat and where they’re going to eat — where their food bowl is going to be, and their water bowl. How they’re going to go outside. How — where their playtime is, where their toys are.”
It can be a lot to handle as a first-time pet owner, but Dogtopia CEO Stephanie Vaughn says day care and some other activities can help relieve some of the stress.
“Dog park, take them places where they can meet other dogs – get all that stimulation. Puppy classes, I highly recommend.”
As for preparing your home: “It’s almost like baby proofing your home, you have to have everything – I mean they’re like kids who come in everything, they’re a full-time job Stephanie said.
But sometimes, it is not a job that every new owner is prepared for.
If you find yourself unable to commit to a new pet entirely, there are some rehoming options.
“Number one talk to your friends. Talk to the people you work with because many times it’s not a conversation we have, and some people are looking for another animal,” said Cathy.
“Some people could help take it for a while and maybe talk to that person who gave it.”
Other options include joining local rehoming Facebook groups or using a rehoming website like Home-to-Home, which you can find on the Nebraska Humane Society’s webpage.
If you are considering giving an animal as a gift for any occasion, animal professionals say to make sure that it is not a complete surprise and that the owners are ready to take care of their new friend.
