Costs rise for spring break travel, but it won’t keep the crowds away

VIRGINIA – It’s that time of year again, when warmer temperatures make us think of spring and spring break, and if you’re lucky, you might be planning a getaway.

From Disney World to the beaches of Florida, spring break hits the roads, skies and seas.

“Especially this year have been cruises,” Laura Tyree, a travel agent for Travel Lovers said. “Lots of flight and stay packages in the Caribbean this year. A few Disney, you know Disney is almost back to normal now.

It is no secret that inflation has caused prices to rise in most industries. Tyree said the journey is no different.

“A family of four at Disney probably could have taken that trip with flights for about $3,000 years ago, before COVID, and now they’re probably paying about $1,200 to $1,500 more for that same trip,” Tyree said.

A lot of people are also driving to their spring break destinations, AAA spokeswoman Morgan Dean said.

“Between 8 and 9 out of every 10 people who commute usually go by car,” Dean said. “We think spring break will probably be similar to this. An awful lot of people hitting the road for a road trip.”

Dean said that on average a round trip from Roanoke to Myrtle Beach costs about $71. And he said that last year it cost you about the same. But five years ago, gas prices were about a dollar cheaper, so it would have only cost about $50 round trip.

However, rising costs do not deter travelers.

“I feel a lot more comfortable going back to doing some of the things I was doing before the pandemic, which is making those great trips, making those memories,” Dean said.
