Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control Issues Cold Weather Advisory For Pet Owners

CHARLOTTE, NC – As temperatures in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg region are expected to drop below freezing in the coming days, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control
(ACC) urges pet owners to take special precautions to ensure the well-being of their companions.

Bring outdoor pets indoors

In light of the upcoming cold weather, ACC emphasizes the importance of bringing outdoor pets indoors to protect them from the harsh conditions. If this is not feasible, consider alternative shelter options such as a garage or a heated basement, ensuring that suitable bedding or straw is used. Do not use blankets or comforters that retain moisture and keep you cold. Pet owners are also advised to be vigilant and aware of any special needs or medical problems their pets may have.

“The safety and health of our animals is paramount, especially in extreme weather conditions,” said Charlotte-Mecklenburg ACC spokeswoman Melissa Knicely. “As the temperature drops, bringing outdoor pets indoors becomes crucial to protect them from the cold. Additionally, it is vital for pet owners to be aware of any unique requirements or medical concerns that their pets can have it.”

The ACC urges pet owners to prioritize the safety and well-being of their pets by taking the following precautions:

Consider breed and coat type: Keep in mind your dog’s breed and coat type when taking him outside. Some breeds are more susceptible to cold temperatures, and dog coats can provide additional protection.

Paw care and inspection: After outdoor activities, inspect your dog’s paws for any signs of frostbite or exposure to treated surfaces. Clean their paws thoroughly with warm water and mild soap. To ensure their safety, choose the ice that accepts pets.

Provide adequate shelter: For outdoor animals, create a well-sheltered space with dry straw, shavings or strips of blanket that trap warm air. Check the beds regularly and provide extra food to generate body heat.

Antifreeze Awareness: Beware of antifreeze, which is deadly to animals. Wash up any spills immediately, especially in garages or driveways.

Water cup maintenance: Make sure the outdoor water cups don’t freeze. Break up any ice and change the water often to keep the animals well hydrated.

Specific advice for different animals:

Cats: While cats prefer the warmth of indoors, outdoor cats pose risks, especially around car engines. Exercise with caution to prevent injury or fatality.

Puppies: Puppies can struggle with the cold, affecting the house. Consider paper training indoors if sensitivity to climate is observed.

Dog clothes: Breeds with short coats, such as bully breeds, greyhounds and chihuahuas, benefit from sweaters or coats. Avoid shaving dogs down to the skin during winter.

Grass for potty breaks: For dogs reluctant to cool off in the snow, use a black plastic or cardboard liner in a grassy area before expected precipitation. Remove after the weather clears for a designated potty area.
