Botanical garden connects, combines annual fall festival with Dia de los Muertos

The Richmond community came together to honor the new season and memories of loved ones past through an event that combines fall festivities with Day of the Dead, sharing themes of love, family and nature.

HarvestFest took place on Saturday, October 28 at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. HarvestFest has been a part of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden’s extensive calendar of events for years, but is seeing some changes this year, according to Michelle Israel, exhibits and programming coordinator at Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens.

Guests experienced the highlights of HarvestFest, such as festive decorations, food, arts and crafts, and writing what they are grateful for on a piece of paper displayed, according to Israel.

This year, the festival also includes the cultural festivities of the Day of the Dead, also known as Dia de los Muertos, according to Israel.

Israel said they chose to include Dia de los Muertos in this year’s festival because of the recent interest people have shown across the country in learning about and connecting with the holiday.

“It symbolizes so many things, no matter what religion or culture you are,” Israel said. “We all go to lose a person close to us, so it’s a way to connect with our ancestors. It’s a way to celebrate their life. It’s a way to remember them and honor them.”

HarvestFest and Dia de los Muertos may not seem to have much in common, but Israel said Lewis Ginter’s staff saw many similar themes. Both occasions celebrate nature, the cycle of life and spending time with loved ones, according to Israel.

“We want to celebrate the changing of the seasons. We want to celebrate the cycle of life,” Israel said. “When the trees start to turn color and the flowers start to fade, it’s all part of the cycle. We are all connected to nature and the energy of the cycle.

Festivities include Mexican food, many vendors selling jewelry and handicrafts, traditional decorations and an ofrenda – a traditional altar used on Dia de los Muertos for remembrance. Google Arts and Culture.

Festival attendees had the opportunity to place pictures of their dead loved ones and battery-powered tea lights on the offerings, according to Israel. For every light on offer, a can of food was donated by Goya Foods.

“The idea is to gather all these names and energy together with the same intention,” Israel said. “What he remembers is to connect not only with the people who have passed, but to connect with the community and who we are today in Richmond.”

The Latin Ballet took the stage on Saturday for two musical performances vibrant with color and sound. Child dancers joined adults on stage for a performance honoring life and culture.

Kadencia Orchestra, a local salsa, bomba and plena band, took the stage later in the day, according to Lewis Ginter. website. Festival guests danced to upbeat music.

Marisol Betancourt, the artistic director of Ballet Latino, said the dance company saw the show as an opportunity to teach festivalgoers about Mexican dance traditions.

“We hope that everyone will have a great experience and learn about the Day of the Dead in case people don’t know, and also learn about the culture behind it,” said Betancourt.

The company combines elements of hip-hop, traditional flamenco dance and modern dance. They included their own altar offerings in the performance and the dancers placed flowers next to pictures of their dead loved ones.

“It’s not just about the dead, it’s about how we live each day to remember our family members who have died,” Betancourt said.

Sharon Rose, a Mechanicsville native, attended the festival with two of her friends. She visits Lewis Ginter several times a year and attended the HarvestFest event a few years ago.

“I really like the inclusion of the Day of the Dead,” said Rose, “I didn’t know much about it, but I like to participate in some of the celebrations. I especially appreciate the market vendors.”

Piper Blackburn, a Richmond native, brought her two children to the event. He brought a photo of his family dog ​​to put on the bid. Afterwards, the family painted pumpkins in the craft store with dozens of other children. Many dressed up in Halloween costumes or with traditional Day of the Dead face paint.
