Avondale police buy local child new bike | News

The Avondale Police Department embodied the Christmas spirit by replacing a bicycle recently stolen from 10-year-old Darius Moore.

Led by local officer Dustin Greenwood, the department rallied behind the cause to help boost the holiday.

“I sent out an email throughout the department to notify people that the parents just want the bike back and I’m trying to get some assistance,” Greenwood said.

“I got a lot of feedback from people, and so a plan was put together. We went to Walmart, I got a bike and a couple of my teammates, and I left it for him.”

Moore’s parents did not want to report the crime; rather, they were focused on getting the bike back for their son. Greenwood said he knew about the theft, but he wasn’t riding the bike.

Then, the officials surprised the boy on December 21 with a new bicycle.

“I just said, ‘I think I found your bike, if you want to look at it and tell me if it’s yours,'” he said. “We hid it in the driveway behind a car, and it came and he looked and was honest about it and said, “No, it’s not like that,” and he looked a little shocked. But I said, “Oh, that’s too bad, man, because we just bought it for you.” And he was quite excited, almost in disbelief at first.

“You could tell he was trying to be polite and he didn’t know if he should take the bike and start riding right away. So, I had to push him into it, saying, ‘Hey, man, take it for a ride.'” he loved.”

The blue and black replacement bike was a bonus for Moore, as blue is his favorite color. Greenwood said his department is about much more than writing tickets and arresting criminals.

“A lot of people work in this agency for the reason that we are staffed with people in the community – even including some of the bad guys that we meet,” he said. “We know a lot about them, personally, based on our experience with them on the streets, and even in bad situations, we treat people with respect. Therefore, it is not a surprise that a child is robbed of his bike and all they want to step up and make it happen.

Greenwood is proud to be with the Avondale Police Department as he strives to personally connect with residents. I often see police officers on their worst days, so when they have the chance to be a part of a healthy moment, it makes the job better.

“People see things and feed off of it — even if it’s not their personal experience,” Greenwood said. “But we gave this boy as a personal experience of what we really are, and I think he can spread this to his friends or to anyone who has something bad to say about us – he had this positive story that probably he will go. to be with him for the rest of his life.

“I think it gives a good representation of what we are all about here. We are very community-oriented, … and doing this act is just another part of it and keep it that way. And I’m glad that I get to be a part of this”.
