A video of a young woman crying with relief and joy after finding her missing pet snake after a week has won likes on Instagram. The girl holds the snake in her arms while having an emotional outburst. This undated video was posted on Instagram by a popular account called “Animals Doing Things” on December 28. Since then it has gathered more than 5 lakh likes. The video also sparked a discussion among netizens about being a responsible pet owner. Many people also saw this video as an opportunity to share their stories of owning a pet snake.

Non-venomous and harmless snakes, such as corn snakes and ball pythons, are sold as pets, but most people still think that snakes are potentially dangerous. Commenting on the aforementioned clip, one Instagram user wrote: “The thought of a snake running around my house for a week without knowing where it is gives me all kinds of anxiety.” “Damn, I almost ran out.”

Someone wrote: “This is exactly why it should be illegal for invasive species to be kept as pets. I’m glad this girl found her pet, but not everyone does….so the escape causes chaos in ecosystems that are already very tight thanks to human activity and destruction. It is incredibly immoral and will harm us all in the end.”

An Instagram user recalled his experience of owning a pet snake and wrote: “Several years ago I had a snake… my friend came over and I immediately said, hey, my snake is got out of her enclosure, she’s kind of released like that. keep an eye out. She was super nervous, so we started looking everywhere… I had already checked under the couch, but I went down to check again and when I I put my face on the ground looking down, it was right there and it literally hit me right in the face and I barely missed it by an inch. We laughed about that for the next few hours.”

According to PETA, snakes or pythons should not be kept as pets as they are “cautious animals that do not like to be held, touched, petted, or passed over.” Buying snakes also promotes the unethical wildlife trade. World Animal Protection argues that it is impossible. to “replicate the space and choose a snake has in its natural environment”. The non-profit states that “due to the stress of captivity, some scientists estimate that 75 percent of snakes kept in captivity die within a year.”
