Google this week released a new version of generative AI technology that it says rivals ChatGPT. The technology, called Gemini Pro, has replaced the previous technology that powers the chatbot Bard.
Google he said in a blog post that Gemini Pro outperformed GPT-3.5 – which was released in April and powers the free version of ChatGPT from OpenAI – in six out of eight industry standard benchmarks.
Google says that Gemini Pro is “much more capable” than its old AI model at performing functions such as “understanding, summarizing, reasoning, coding and planning.”
Technology has received criticism in the last two days, however, with users who have posted on social media about significant errors in some of Bard’s answers to direct questions. The fact that Google admitted to forge a demo of the Gemini technology drew more criticism.
But, let’s see how the new version of Bard performs the tasks for travel.
In September, we tried Bard to travel soon after it added several extensions to access data in real time through Google products: Maps, Flights, Hotels, YouTube and Workspace, which includes Gmail, Docs and Drive.
Spoiler: It’s not a stretch to say that Bard is actually useful in some cases, but experimental technology still has its limits.
Roundup of Youtube Travel Videos
Younger generations often plan trips through videos made by creators on TikTok and Youtube.
With the YouTube extension enabled, I asked Bard to find influencer videos about hidden gems in New York City. The answer came with referenced YouTube videos, playable in the chatbot window.
So, I asked Bard to give a summary of the main points of each video, most of them about 12 minutes. And it worked. The chatbot was able to “watch” five videos and present the main points from each.
The user can also click on the video to open it in a new tab on YouTube, but wait until the ad is over before clicking; otherwise, a window might open for the ad only, not the main video.
Creating the itinerary
I asked Bard to create an itinerary for Thursday evening through Sunday afternoon in New York City, showcasing “unique modern art, high-quality modern bars, public art and music events.”
He basically filled out the request, sharing three versions of an itinerary that call out the places to visit and details about what they are. While Bard can share real-time information for flights and hotels, it doesn’t have the ability to do the same for events or ticketing activities.
In the previous Bard’s test, the answer to a similar prompt included links to several sites including Wikipedia, which are generally not helpful. In the last test, Bard didn’t provide links to all the places referenced in the itinerary, but it’s still a good place to start for travel planning.
In particular, a single prompt generated a complete itinerary that was straight to the point, but provided enough context. That simplicity this cannot be said of all AI models which were released this year.
Flights and Hotels
I asked about flight options from Raleigh to New York City for next Thursday and hotel options for Thursday through Sunday. The links for many flight and hotel options were completely accurate, including airline, time and price information.
Even though I asked for hotel options for three nights, the chatbot presented round-trip flight options for a week-long trip. After clarifying that the return flight should be on Sunday, the chatbot presented new options.
Restaurants
Bard doesn’t have an extension exactly for restaurants yet, but it can suggest restaurants and more through the Maps extension. The results are presented with an interactive Google map and links to restaurant suggestions.
Although the question was asked in the same chat as the New York itinerary, it featured restaurants based on my current location of Playa del Carmen, Mexico. After clarifying that the suggestions should be for New York City, the chatbot generated new responses.
Email access for flight confirmations
With the Workspace extension, Bard can access the user’s Gmail account. I booked flights this month from Mexico to Michigan in the United States, and asked the chatbot to remind me of the departure time.
He responded with the exact times and locations using the information he pulled from the confirmation email. It also presented links to those emails that were opened in Gmail.
When it first asked about my flights at the end of the month, the chatbot presented flight options instead of checking my email about flights that were already booked. Therefore, it is necessary to ask specifically that the chatbot checks e-mails if this is the intention. After clarifying, the chatbot presented the appropriate information.
Creating travel sales content
I asked Bard to create copy for an Airbnb listing for a two-bedroom, two-bath house in Traverse City, Michigan. Bard typically presents three drafts in his responses, which is particularly useful when generating this type of content.
One issue is that it makes assumptions that may not be true. One project said the home has a washer and dryer, although Bard was not instructed to include that information.
It is probably best to include more details in advance to avoid such problems. But, the chatbot will take feedback and rewrite a draft with relevant alterations, including making it short or long as needed.
At the very least, generating copy in Bard can be used as a time saver or for inspiration, especially if writing is not the user’s forte.
