More than 300,000 Russians have signed a petition calling for a train driver to be fired after he threw a cat off a train believing it to be a stray.

The white and ginger cat named Twix escaped from his owner on a train traveling between Yekaterinburg and St. Petersburg on January 11.

It was found by the driver who removed the animal from the carriage as the train stopped in Kirov, east of Moscow.

Hundreds of people searched for the animal in sub-zero temperatures, but the cat was found dead on January 20 with reports that it had died from the cold and suffered suspected animal bites.

The incident sparked outrage in Russia with thousands of shares of footage of the cat falling into the snow in temperatures approaching minus 30C.

A separate petition calling for criminal charges against the driver had gathered more than 100,000 signatures yesterday, just two days after it was launched. Local authorities have so far refused to prosecute the driver.
