Tips to help you revitalize your garden this spring

Gardening is a rewarding hobby that pays a lot of significant dividends. Many people love gardening because it allows them to spend time outside, and that simple pleasure is actually a notable benefit of working in a garden. But the National Consumer Horticulture Initiative notes that gardening provides a host of additional benefits, including helping people get adequate exercise levels, reducing stress and improving mood.

With so much to gain from gardening, it’s no wonder people look forward to getting their hands dirty in the garden every spring. As the weather warms up, consider these tips to help bring a garden back to life.

1. Discard the dead weight. Winter can take its toll on a garden, even in regions where the weather between December and early spring is not particularly harsh. Remove dead plants that have died in the spring and prune any perennials that need it. Branches that fell during winter storms should also be removed at this point if they have not been discarded before.

2. Test the soil. Soil test kits can be purchased at local garden centers and home improvement retailers. Such tests are not cheap and can reveal if the soil needs to be modified to help the plants thrive in the coming months.

3. Mulch garden beds. Mulching benefits a garden by helping the soil retain moisture and preventing weed growth. Several garden experts note that mulching in the spring can prevent weed seeds from germinating over the spring and summer. This means the plants don’t have to fight weeds for water when the temperature warms up. It also means that gardeners don’t have to spend time pulling weeds this summer.

4. Inspect your irrigation system. Homeowners with in-ground irrigation systems or above-ground systems that use a drip or soaker feature can inspect the systems before plants begin to flower. Damaged sprinkler heads or broken wires can deprive plants of the water they need to flourish and ultimately thrive once the weather warms.

5. Tune up your tools. Gardening tools have probably been sitting around collecting dust since autumn. Serious gardeners know that tools can be expensive, so it pays to protect the investment by maintaining the tools. Sharp pruners help make plants less vulnerable to infestation and infection. Well-maintained tools like a shovel and hoe make even the most demanding gardening tasks a little easier, so don’t forget to tune up your tools before the weather heats up.

It’s almost gardening season, which means gardeners can get started on the prep work needed to ensure their gardens grow strong and beautiful this spring.
