The Big Bike Film Night Announces 2024 Selection & Dates

PRESS RELEASE: The Big Bike Film Night 2024

In its 10th year, The Big Bike Film Night will celebrate cycling in all its glorious shapes and forms and will cycle across New Zealand from Friday 9 February to Friday 14 June with a program billed as ‘a festival of short films inspired and designed for the devotee of two wheels’.

With its humble beginnings in 2015, The Big Bike Film Night is now a highly anticipated Film Festival that brings the love of cycling to cinemas, featuring a range of international and New Zealand films specifically selected by the Curator/” Film Pedlar” based in Taupō. , Brett Cotter.

“Each year I set out with one goal – to bring together the world’s best cycling short films for our audience – celebrating the fun, adventure and inspiration that bikes allow,” says Mr Cotter.

“Our stellar 2024 collection contains 10 fascinating films that are as varied and diverse as you could hope for. Amazingly enough, we actually have 3 films in this collection that are set in the cycling mecca of Central Otago,” says Mr Cotter.

Double Everest – Shot against the scenic backdrop of Queenstown, this film follows boundary-pushing rider Ben Hildred, “the eater of vertical miles” on his ultimate quest. “Everesting” is a feather that few cyclists have in their caps and its concept is diabolically simple: choose any hill, anywhere in the world, and repeat in one go until you climb 8,848 m – the equivalent height of Mount Everest. But what if your head is full? So full in fact, you think … “Hey, why not do two Everests?”.

“To Ben, it’s just another mountain bike ride, but to us mere mortals, it’s completely bonkers and brilliant; that’s why I love it!” exclaimed Mr. Cotter.

– a documentary about a community of cyclists in Alexandra who all share a similar love and passion for their place, their people and their sport;

– and, a determined father and daughter prepare for their biggest adventure together: an ambitious race that will push them to their physical and emotional limits in a grueling bike race around Central Otago’s Lake Dunstan Trail;
Even in the treasure of films is
– a visually commanding film that follows the colorful adventure of a rider running through the most beautiful places from Guatemala to Peru via Boliviana bringing together a masterpiece of breathtaking images and memories

– how a bicycle can be much more than a bicycle, as it brings changes to people’s lives;

– after 10 young people learn to ride a long way….embarking on a 900km bike ride from Wellington to Wānaka;

– a fast-paced, funny and feminist film about bike racing in Toronto, Canada that finally gives an innovative, almost forgotten athletic hero his rightful place in history;
and a moving film set in Scotland, showing how the simple joy of cycling can make a big impact;
ALL in the mix!

“The power of storytelling is at the forefront of what we offer, and the belief that the humble bicycle can improve our health, inspire and lift people with where it can take us; connect communities with stories that captivate us, stories that they make us think, and above all, they inspire us to get out and ride,” says Mr Cotter.
