Support group starts in Chilliwack for those grieving loss of a pet

Group offers ‘safe, non-judgmental space’ to grieve with others who are grieving a significant death

The loss of a beloved pet can be devastating if people feel they cannot recognize them.

A pet loss support group was started on Valentine’s Day through the Chilliwack Hospice Society in recognition that the death of a pet can cause immense and intense feelings of loss and grief.

Pet owners who suffer this type of loss sometimes suffer quietly and alone, without the support of friends, family and community.

Some may even feel that the loss must be insignificant compared to other deaths.

“Giving those grieving the death of a pet a therapeutic group allows a safe, non-judgmental space to mourn this significant death with others who are also suffering,” according to the post from the Chilliwack Hospice Society.

The Pet Loss Grief Support Group will be led by university practice students under the supervision of Jennifer Dacre, manager of bereavement services at Chilliwack Hospice Society.

The group meets once a week for four weeks, starting in February. 14. See more: www.chilliwackhospice.org/…/grieving-the-death…/ or call (604) 795-4660 or email jennifer@chilliwackhospice.org
