A domestic worker in Formby was shocked to look out his window during a screen break to see a bird of prey hunting in the back garden of his semi-detached home.

A sparrowhawk had seen a young pigeon in the garden and sensing the chance of an easy meal had swooped down to stun the bird. But it was not on this occasion that the man entered.

The video above captures the moment the sparrow sat watching its prey from the top of a children’s swing, moments before the owner made the decision to scare it away.

“I don’t usually intervene in these types of situations as just nature,” said the 45-year-old. Liverpool World. “But only a few days before I saw the severed head of the pigeon staring at me from a nest in my tree and I watched it try to take its first flight. So this time, I chased the sparrow.”

He added: “The pigeon was shocked and had a cut on its back, but it disappeared into the bushes and, as far as I knew, lived to fight another day. The whole family certainly flew the nest.”

Sparrowhawks are relatively small birds of prey, suitable for hunting in restricted areas such as dense forests. They are not uncommon in Formby and the nearby Ainsdale Nature Reserve, which are home to sweeping pines. There is even a pub in the area named after them – The Sparrowhawk.

The RSPB says adult male goshawks have greyish-grey backs and wings and orange-brown bars on the chest and belly. Females and young birds have brown backs and wings, and brown bars below. Sparrowhawks have bright yellow or orange eyes, yellow legs and heels. Females are larger than males, as with all birds of prey.
