South Water Street bike path will move, and other Providence traffic changes

Mayor Brett Smiley revealed Wednesday that he plans to move a controversial cycle track in what he described as an effort to facilitate traffic links arising from the Washington Bridge closed

Smiley’s news came as part of a press release detailing numerous measures to mitigate traffic in the city.

“As part of these mitigation efforts, the administration plans to remove the two-way protected bike lane [South Water Street] and relocate infrastructure to the raised sidewalk immediately adjacent to the existing bike path to restore two-lane travel lanes, maintain a parking lane with adequate space and preserve long-distance bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure. [South] Water Road,” Smiley’s office said.

When will the changes take effect?

But it won’t happen immediately. The administration said it will hold community meetings throughout the summer “then present the final plan for removal and design plans to the Green and Complete Street Advisory Board for their informative review.” The council advocates for shared roads and more transport options. But every plan would need his approval to move forward.
