Revelstoke council looks to dial in new $1M mountain bike park

There will soon be a new place for bike enthusiasts to “bomb” in Revelstoke.

The city is proposing a mountain bike park to be built in Centennial Park.

“It was identified as a project through community consultation when we embarked on a new Parks and Rec Master Plan,” he said.

Laurie Donato, director of parks, recreation and culture.

The city is looking at a large area behind the track field in Centennial Park to build a paved pump track.

“We have the project estimated at just over $1 million,” Donato added.

That amount includes the construction of the pump track, landscaping, and the improvement of a road leading to the new amenity.

The money will come from grants and the provincial government’s Growing Communities Fund.

“We’re in the very preliminary stages,” Donato explained. “Once we have something that everyone is comfortable with, then we will start doing some public information and consultation so that the public can review the design.”

The project is exciting news for the Revelstoke Cycling Association (RCA).

“We are delighted,” said Alex Cooper, executive director. “We had a new director on board, Harrison Salisbury, he really championed the project. He took the initiative and organized and organized to make the cycling community speak for him.”

Cooper added that the RCA is also happy with the location chosen by the city.

“Centennial Park is central, there’s a bike path that goes right by it, and it’s a well-used park with ball and soccer fields and other amenities.”

The RCA is also involved in providing input on the design of the park.

“My understanding is that it’s big enough that it could attract competitions, but I think mostly it’s going to be a fun place for people to go and practice their cycling skills,” Cooper said. “I think it will be a popular recreation facility in town.”

On its website, track builder Parkitect describes a pump track as “a track for wheeled sports equipment that, when driven properly, does not require pedaling or pushing, but an action of” pumping” to keep the momentum going.”
