Chesterton Feed and Garden Center’s tradition of a resident 4-H turkey continues this year. The annual event began when Chuck Roth, owner of Chesterton Feed & Garden Center, brought in one of his turkeys for customers. Having raised poultry for many years, I was surprised how many people have never seen a live turkey. Local schools began calling on Chuck to bring the turkey into their classrooms and teach students about turkeys and their habitat. Turkeys are very sociable birds and respond well to children.
“Turks love attention. Even something as simple as talking to a turkey is enough to make them happy and ruffle their feathers,” says Chuck. After many years and many visits to Turkey, schools began to bring their students to Chesterton Feed and Garden Center for Turkey Tours, a tradition that has led to today and created many good memories for students and teachers. Students will learn fun facts about turkeys and their living habits.
First-generation turkey visitors now bring their children to see live turkey, delivering an enjoyable learning experience. Says Chuck, “It’s great to see so many new faces during our Turkey Tours, as well as familiar ones. The name of our resident turkey comes from many sources, such as employees and friends. We also had a traditional “Tom” one year.
Any school or group wishing to set up a free Turkey Tour can call Chesterton Feed & Garden Center to reserve a date and time.
The general public is welcome to visit “Felix” until November 22 at any time during business hours. Start your tradition this year and come see “Felix” the turkey at Chesterton Feed & Garden Center.
