Police receive more than 40 calls as dirt bikers swarm in Auckland

Four people have been arrested after a large group of dirt bike riders gathered and rode around Auckland yesterday afternoon.

Arrested riders saw their bikes seized.

It started when about 20 riders started gathering in Manurewa shortly after noon.

“The group grew larger and drove into Newmarket, Parnell and Tamaki Drive before returning to Counties Manukau,” Senior Sergeant Anton Maisey said in a statement today.

“They continued to return to Manurewa and wound up on Mahia Rd, on to Roscommon Rd where a number of police units intercepted the group and were able to disrupt them.

“The police and the wider community have zero tolerance for this dangerous driving which puts other motorists and members of the public at risk,” Maisey said, adding that police had received more than 40 calls in relation to ” the bad driving behavior” of the group.

Police will not tolerate this type of offense, Maisey said.

“These riders show complete disregard for others. At one stage there were close to 80 dirt bike riders blocking intersections and riding on the wrong side of the road.

“We will continue to hold these riders to account and impound their bikes.

“Yesterday’s actions continue to be investigated and we will use all available avenues around enforcement.”

A 21-year-old man, a 25-year-old man and a 24-year-old man face charges related to the incident.

A 14-year-old boy was referred to youth services.
