Pet owners warned over food packet choking risk after dog deaths

Pet owners are advised to be aware of a common domestic hazard responsible for killing thousands of furry friends every year.

Food bags like chips and pet food pose a suffocation hazard, veterinarians and safety advocates warn.

“Empty bags are attractive to dogs and cats because they retain the smells and tastes of food waste,” RSPCA NSW chief vet Dr Liz Arnott told 7NEWS.com.au.

“Once the animal’s head is in the bag, inhalation can cause the bag to seal around the nose and mouth, leading to suffocation.”

An eleven-year-old jack russell terrier Alfie choked on a bag of chips in the United States late last month.

“You think your dog is safe at home… but on Sunday October 29th I came home from shopping to a total tragic accident,” said owner Jess Godsmark.

“My beautiful boy I found with a bag of chips on his head that one of my other dogs had managed to remove from the kitchen table, as he never got on the chairs.

“I am absolutely devastated. I feel broken, numb and totally empty.”

Godsmark shared her story with the advocacy organization Prevent Pet Suffocation in hopes of spreading awareness of the common but little-known danger.

The Gonzales family’s three-year-old Pyrenean puppy Stella suffocated on a bag of Cheetos.

Owner Mike said the family were “devastated beyond belief” to find Stella dead on the dining room floor after choking on the bag of chips.

“In a short time when we were gone, our dog went into the trash and pulled out a bag of chips. She choked on it,” he said.

“He had the chip bag up to his ears and when he inhales the bag it forms a vacuum seal that suffocates him within minutes.”

At least two to three pets are lost every week in the United States from food bag suffocation, warns Prevent Pet Suffocation.

Closer to home, Australian vets say they have seen cases involving chip or snack bags, cereal box bags and even bread bags.

Victoria RSPCA chief vet Dr Bronwyn Oke said the animals went into a fight response when they were trapped.

“There is a panic, and they don’t think … they don’t think logically how to get the bag off their heads,” Oke said.

“And they start breathing faster and faster, and they pull the plastic closer to their mouth and all the proper oxygen is absorbed and they can suffocate like that.”

Prevent Pet Suffocation suggests that owners serve snacks in a bowl and store food in containers instead of bags.

It also says to cut or tear all bags after use and to secure kitchen waste away from the reach of curious pets.

Police have charged two people in connection with an alleged robbery with violence incident that occurred in Kelso.
