Orange County Animal Services advises how to keep pets warm

Tuesday night is expected to be the coldest night of the season so far. Orange County Animal Services is now reminding people not to forget their furry loved ones while the temperatures are cooler.

What you need to know

  • There is a common misbelief that dogs and cats are more resistant to cold than people
  • Many young, older and pets with a medical condition may have more difficulty regulating their body temperature
  • Pet owners are advised to be careful when their pets are outside during the cooler months

In a statement from the Orange County Animal Services, pets were advised to be kept indoors during the extreme cold, dispelling the common misconception that, because of their fur, dogs and cats are more resistant to cold than people.

Many young people, older people and those animals with medical conditions are at a higher risk and may have more difficulty regulating their body temperature.

Although milder temperatures are expected later in the week on Thursday, rain is also expected on Friday and into the weekend.

Orange County Animal Services has released a list of tips for pet and livestock owners as temperatures continue to drop.

Check or replace the water often

As the temperature continues to drop, it is important to ensure that animals have adequate access to drinking water.

Orange County Animal Services recommends using heated buckets or water heaters to ensure the water does not freeze. Changing the water often is also an alternative to ensure that the water does not freeze.

Check under car hoods

Car engines can be a good place for cats and other animals in the cooler months. Car owners are encouraged to check under the hood before starting the engines to make sure no animals have crawled under for the heat.

Check and dry the paws

Car owners are also encouraged to be wary of common car chemicals that have sweet smells, such as antifreeze. These chemicals can be tempting and very harmful to animals.

After hiking and time outside, be sure to dry your feet after spending time outside and check for other common cold weather problems like cracked feet and frostbite.

Make sure the animal is wearing an ID tag

During the colder months, pets’ sense of smell can be affected by the colder temperatures, making it harder for some pets to find their home. In the event that a domestic animal gets lost, it is important to make sure that the animal wears its collar with an identity tag.

Orange County Animal Services also recommends getting pets microchipped to improve the chances of returning home safely.

Do routine checks

The protection of pets by visiting a routine veterinarian and having routine checks is recommended. It helps to stay aware of any underlying health issues, especially those affected by extreme temperatures.

Pet owners are also encouraged to stay prepared and proactive by educating others. They are advised to be careful how much time their beloved animal friends spend outside, and how to protect them from the cold weather and the wind if they are not able to bring them home.

People can contact animal services immediately if they see an animal left outside without proper protection by calling 919-942-PETS (7387). If it is after hours, people are encouraged to call 911 if the situation is life threatening.
