Nashville, TN bike group hosts community ride for NDOT pilot bikeway project

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Thursday morning, a small group of people gathered at the Cumberland Transit bike shop, preparing for a quick ride.

They rode down 31st Avenue North in Nashville’s West End.

“If you have people designing and engineering bike modes that don’t actually use them, it’s pretty easy to look at a map and just say, ‘Oh, I want to put this in there,'” KJ Garner said.

Garner is the founder of the Nashville nonprofit Bike fun and lead the charge by hosting this community run.

His goal is to ride this road and collect feedback on the new bikeway pilot project the Nashville Department of Transportation (NDOT) recently installed.

“It’s really nice to see a government entity actually getting feedback from the people who live, work and play in the areas they’re trying to change and develop,” Garner said.

Since NDOT is currently working to resurface the road from West End Avenue to Park Plaza, they also wanted to use this opportunity to incorporate improvements that could improve pedestrian safety.

“I don’t feel safe, but I feel heard,” Vicki Stinnett said.

Stinnett was part of the group riding Thursday morning.

As an active cyclist, he is concerned about his safety on the road, hoping that the city will work to improve its infrastructure.

“We need a much higher awareness of pedestrians and bicycles, and I would include the WeGo system and the bus stop,” he said.

After noticing a variety of problems, including cars parked in the bike lanes, the group met at Cumberland Transit to discuss their ride.

“For myself, I was listening and seeing how I could bring that back to my neighborhood, and then for future conversations I could improve my immediate neighborhood,” Stinnett said.

As ideas are shared, Garner and others hope their feedback will help improve Nashville’s infrastructure and make it a safer city.

“We really need to work to make our situations better for people who don’t have a car, don’t use a vehicle, and want to get around the city on foot or by bike,” he said.
