Man whose ‘pitbull-type dog’ bit teen’s arm given seized pet back – but ordered to follow strict rules

A man whose “pitbull-type dog” bit a teenager’s arm has been given back his captured pet – but with a set of strict rules. Carl Jamieson found himself in court after the animal sank its teeth into the young man in the summer.

The dog, Hugo, started “playfully biting” his lead while he was out for a walk, a bit overheard. He then jumped and bit the teenager, ripping off the sleeve of his coat, leaving him with “superficial” scratches.

Greater Manchester Police attorney Alice Cocker said Thameside The Magistrates Court heard Mr Jamieson, 36, had the dog put down after a member of the public who saw the incident called the police.

The police took the animal and took it to the kennels. The court heard staff said the animal was “well-behaved and easy to handle”, describing it as “approachable and friendly, but rambunctious”.

Steven Greenough, a canine legislation officer at GMP, examined the dog and identified it as a “pit bull” breed. The animal was microchipped and castrated.

Mr Jamieson, who had no legal representation, told magistrates the dog is “very friendly” but was not trained at the time of the incident. An application was made by GMP for the destruction of the dog under section 4B of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.

Bank president Sheila Levell said he could get his pet back, but under strict conditions. Mr. Jamieson, of York Street, Buryit was said that “one is on him to control the dog at all times.”

The animal must wear a muzzle in public and be kept on a lead – and must be kept securely at home to prevent its escape. Mr Jamieson must also obtain third party insurance and an exemption certificate for the dog, and keep it on his property.

If the rules are broken, it could be chased and the dog put down. Mr Jamieson was also ordered to pay £400 towards the cost of the dog being neutered and chipped.
