I was disgusted by October’s Moonlight Bike Ride on the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge and will not support a repeat. The run was essentially a recreational activity and not one that was “wildlife dependent,” as long as the US Fish and Wildlife Service generally requires public use. The race took place after sunset, a time when visitors to the shelter are normally required to leave. And after sunset, most of the wildlife remains, and then the night shift becomes active. I paid an unscheduled visit to the shelter. I got out while the cyclists were gathering. About 200 cyclists were in Lot 1. Many arrived via cars. I saw rabbits playing dodge-em from cars, indicative of how this after-hours activity was not in harmony with the natural environment. I left before the brightly lit people and bikes came down the road to the shelter.

Some organizations provided the bell and lights and food and more, thus obtaining free publicity that is undoubtedly a commercial benefit, something that is not allowed in a federal facility.

Parker River National Wildlife Refuge is not a national recreation area. We can look at the refuge as a refuge for wildlife and not to become a playground. Moon bike racing may have been fun for people, but not for wildlife. Cycling was not a wildlife dependent use.

What’s next, a road race? I hope not.
