HUB Cycling honours Burnaby volunteer for bike education

Gwen Litchfield was one of five HUB Cycling volunteers honored by the organization for their contributions over the past year.

A Burnaby woman has been honored for her volunteer work last year, cycling the region on the road to safer cycling for all.

Gwen Litchfield received HUB Cycling’s volunteer appreciation award for her time as an instructor for the organization’s cycling education programs.

She was one of five individuals to receive the recognition, all of which, and others, were recognized during an awards ceremony on Tuesday, March 12 at the Cinematheque in Vancouver.

Bicycle education, according to HUB Cycling, helps improve safety and comfort, as well as promotes awareness and knowledge, for road users of all ages.

“Each year, HUB Cycling delivers cycling education to thousands of people in Metro Vancouver through our Bike to School, StreetWise, Ride Your Path and Workplace Cycling Workshop programs,” reads the advocacy group’s website.

“Our engaging courses include cycling theory and practical riding experiences to help people build skills and confidence in cycling for commuting. All courses are taught by our extremely friendly and experienced team of cycling instructors”.

The HUB Cycling awards have shone a light on the people and projects that make cycling around Metro Vancouver safer and more enjoyable for 11 years.

Additionally, TransLink, the regional transit authority serving Burnaby, won the organization’s Biggest Leap Award for making impactful policy and infrastructure changes.

“Our ongoing partnership with HUB Cycling continues to grow as we commit to combating climate change and creating a greener future for our region,” TransLink CEO Kevin Quinn said in a statement.

“That’s why it’s so important to fund TransLink’s Access for All Plan and ensure we can continue to develop roads before people, including safe cycling infrastructure, so our communities have more sustainable options for riding Metro Vancouver”.
