How to keep your dog safe while you travel this holiday season

You may already have your flight booked for this holiday, but knowing how to keep your pet safe while away is always a challenge.

Leaving on a trip can be chaotic, especially while travelers consider which gifts to choose for their loved ones. It is also a stressful time for animals, who can pick up the signs that you are out – so what do you do with your pet while you’re gone?

Here are a few things to consider when you start to find your pet a place to stay.

Is a pet sitter or a boarding facility better?

According to the Animal Humane Society, a pet sitter It might be a better option for long stays, especially if you have more than one pet. Animals with complicated medical problems or those who are afraid of new environments may do better at home, especially if the pet sitter is a familiar friend or family member. Pet owners should give care instructions and ask how their pets will be treated while they are away.

“You want to know what their protocol is in an emergency,” said Claire Ellington, senior general manager of Rover Oaks Pet Resort.

Hotels for pets typically requires up-to-date vaccinations and some information about your pet’s medical history. They can also be expensive.

Ellington said anyone leaving their pet at a hotel should do a tour first and read reviews carefully. She advises pet owners to ask plenty of questions as they walk through the facility. How many hours are the animals in custody without supervision? Do the employees seem happy to be there? It may also be good to ask if any team members are trained in CPR for animals.

“Does it look clean? Do the dogs look calm or relaxed?” Ellington said. “You can tell a lot just by walking.”

There are two Rover Oaks locations in Houston, which are mostly reserved for the holiday season. Ellington recommends calling the facilities to inquire about availability or the waiting list.

Camp Run-A-Mutt

This Dog boarding and daycare site it’s a place to consider sending your dog while you’re away. The cage-free facility has two locations in the Houston area and always has someone present with the dogs.

While prices usually start at $46 per day, accommodation during the holiday season will cost $55 until the New Year. Before the dogs can stay overnight, they have to spend a day of testing in the facility. The staff will determine if your furry friend can spend time with workers and other dogs without misbehaving. Availability this month is tight, so be sure to call ahead to get a spot.

Houston Bark Park

Houston Bark Park has three locations in the Houston area that are also limited in space. Dogs must qualify for day care by passing a temperament test, and are required to be up-to-date on rabies and other vaccines. Each day will cost $65, and the facility asks pet parents to bring their dog’s favorite food.

The Ruff House

While the House Ruff has limited availability, there are spots open in December for pet owners looking for a cage free place for their pups. Boarding costs $55 per night and requires a pet evaluation from at least five days before the dog stays overnight.
