Gusty Ontario snow squalls may make for tough long-weekend travel

Expect northwesterly winds to warm to southern Ontario on Friday, with lake-effect snow flurries developing downwind of Lake Huron and the Bay Georgiana during the morning hours.

Periods of lake effect snow will continue into Saturday before more widespread snow arrives in southern Ontario for the day on Sunday.

Gusts of 40-60km/h are expected across the region through Friday and Saturday, with stronger gusts of 50-70km/h on the back for our Sunday.

Snow totals in Ontario

RELATED: Because the Great Lakes produce some of the heaviest snow in the world

Forecasters expect snowfall totals through Saturday amounting to about 5-10 cm downwind of the lakes, including Goderich, Stratford and Orangeville. People around the Greater Toronto Area could see some dusting from this event, with less than 5 cm for the northern GTA and less than 2 cm from Toronto proper south

Larger totals are likely where you pour out heavier and more persistent. Widespread totals of 10-15 cm are in stages for Kincardine, Collingwoodand Barrie, with a range of 15-25 cm possible around Port Elgin.

The combination of snowfall and gusty winds will significantly reduce visibility, leading to dangerous travel periods through the weekend. Conditions can change quickly over the short distances around the snow sharks, with calm conditions giving way to heavy snow and dangerously low visibility in a matter of metres.
