GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A local group is looking for a new home after losing their home court. Now, they need your help to make it happen. Grand Rapids Bike Polo says it’s time to get enough money.
On Thursday nights, Morgan Tinney often gears up for a quick pick-up game of bike polo. Two teams of three meet, each trying to reach five points.
“It’s like hockey on bikes. It’s like horse riding on bikes,” Grand Rapids Bike Polo President Morgan Tinney explained. “It’s hard to get started, but once you get into it, it’s really fun. It’s the most fun you can have on a bike.”
A group of 30 to 40 people were playing at Belknap Park. Tinney says the love for pickleball grew, so did the number of courts for the sport.

“So, they expanded and have wonderful pickleball facilities here now. But yeah, we’ve been on hiatus and playing in this parking lot since then, and it’s been almost three years,” Tinney added.
Their temporary home is a parking lot in Seward right next to Las Canchas.
“There’s a lot of cracks and bumps and stuff, so the ball just bounces all over the place,” explained Tinney. “Well, it’s a good excuse when you don’t do well – just hit the surface.”

“We also lend bikes that we let people ride. So, if anyone wants to try it, we encourage anyone who is interested to come and play,” he added.
The city has already established two courts. Tinney says they need a key feature, dear — sideboards. Tinney says they raised $24,000 which is a little more than half of their goal.
He says that the state will match if they can reach $41,000 in 60 days. Tinney adds that this project will benefit more than just his club.
“Highland Park is a great park, and this will be just another improvement for it. It’s not just for bike polo. These courts are for hockey, football, soccer, and bike polo, of course,” he added.
