Garden Eco-project: Garden Eco-Project at Mahatma Phule Sanskrutik Bhavan in Wanowrie Pune | Pune News

Pune: Several residents of Wanowrie have collaborated with officials of the civic body’s solid waste management department to set up an environmental project, spreading over 8,000 sqft at the Mahatma Phule Sanskrutik Bhavan. Located on Vitthal Rao Shivarkar Road, the facility includes a butterfly garden, vegetable patch and oxyzone, with more than 300 varieties of plants. “Last year, the PMC launched the initiative to create a terrace garden in all its offices, but since the building where Wanowrie-Ramtekdi’s office is located is not owned by the corporation, it did not we can’t do it here. Our mohalla committee members have been working on this project long before the PMC initiative was launched, incorporating the expertise of teachers, environmentalists and NGOs,” said health inspector NR Mujhawar. The project will be inaugurated on February 14, after which it will be open to the public to visit for free. The project’s chief architect, Ashish Sankpal, who is also a member of the apex committee, said, “The work started a year ago. We collected waste materials like sinks, bathtubs, crates, clay matkas, old cycles, drums and so on from housing societies in the area to repurpose as pots to plant various fruits, vegetables and flowers. With the theme of Best From Waste, our goal was to show citizens how they can recycle waste.” The project invites citizens to water the plants and help maintain the garden, and there is a space for the elderly to sit and relax in a bamboo hut in the garden. Sharing her expertise in botany, Anushka Kajbaje, visiting faculty at the Bharati Vidyapeeth Institute of Environmental Education and Research and member of the mohalla committee, helped create several sections for the project. “Oxyzone presents indoor plants that provide a large amount of oxygen, such as the spider plant, the snake plant, the money plant and so on so that citizens can be aware of what types of plants can keep it at home,” said Kajbaje. The medicinal plants section has species used in Ayurveda such as arjun, behada and shatavari. The butterfly garden has plants like sunflower, calendula and curry leaves which are attractive for butterflies to lay their eggs. Details about the plants will be available on posters instead of QR codes.
