Fruita bike program gives student opportunity to give back to community

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – A Fruita Monument High School program gives students hands-on experience and prepares them for life beyond high school.

The bike technology program at the high school allowed students to collect bikes spotted or broken by the community. Throughout the school year, bike technicians, also known as students, have been working to fix them.

Ashton Haws, a sophomore at Fruita Monument High School, decided to give the stationary bikes to other students in the community who had no means of transportation to and from school.

“I just went through Facebook, posted on the Fruita message board to see if anyone was willing to donate a bike, and it was great after that,” Haws said.

Jeremiah Baskin, a teacher at Fruita Monument High School, said the bike technology program allows students to solve problems and take the skills they learn in the classroom and apply them to the real world.

“Not everyone has to go to a four-year institution, for me this class teaches kids how to solve problems, you’re going to be faced with a lot of problems. How to fix them with the tools you have,” said Baskin.

After a week of Haws reaching out on the Fruita Facebook message board, he and another student collected enough bikes to fill an entire shipping container.
