Front Street Animal Shelter’s free pet adoption for holidays is almost over

Bring on the bells and wag your tail, Front Street Animal Shelter is waiving adoption fees before Christmas. Families can still adopt a furry friend for free at Front Street Animal Shelter until December 23rd.

The shelter launched its campaign out of necessity, announcing at the beginning of December that they were beyond the maximum capacity and had to resort to housing the dogs in their offices.

Ryan Hinderman, the head of communications at Front Street Animal Shelter, said they had a total of about 650 animals in their care.

“Most dogs that can be safely paired with other dogs have been mated and so there is literally no additional space to maintain humane and safe conditions for the animals,” Hinderman said.

Since the start of their promotion on December 9, they have been able to adopt 300 animals. However, recent storms have brought an additional influx.

The shelter said adopting now can save people more than just the adoption fee.

“Every animal that is adopted will be fixed, vaccinated and microchipped,” Hinderman said. “It’s amazing because all the things that if you were to get an animal for free in another place and you do that, that would be between $500 and $1.00o. When you adopt, you can get everything for what is normally a low adoption. but currently there is no adoption rate.”

As they work to remove the dogs, they ask good Samaritans for a hand when it comes to lost dogs.

“If you can hold that dog for even a couple of days before you take him to the shelter, there’s a good chance you can find the owner before they even need to come and pack our shelter population,” Hinderman said. . .

They shared the following tips if you find a lost dog:

  • Have the dog scanned for a microchip at a veterinary office or shelter
  • Post your found pet on Nextdoor, Craigslist, PawBoost and Facebook lost and found pages
  • Walk the dog around. Most dogs are found close to home, so asking the neighbors if they know who the dog belongs to could go a long way.
  • Upload the dog’s photo to Petco Love Lost, a free facial recognition tool that will make it easier for the pet owner to find the dog on the platform.
  • Report pets to 24PetWatch and Pawboost
  • Post colorful “Found Dog” flyers at busy intersections within a 1 mile radius of where the dog was found.

“This would be our Christmas miracle to make some room and make families really lucky with these amazing animals,” Hinderman said.
