Fire Department Rescue Pet Snake ‘Nagini’ Stuck In Kitchen Cabinet For 12 Hours

The fire department in Herrin, a city in Illinois, USA responded to a strange call for help on Wednesday. Lorelei Hills asked the fire department if they could help rescue her pet snake named Nagini that was hanging on the side panel of the kitchen cabinet. Nagini was caught in a strange position after she moved out of her enclosure. Two firefighters from the Herrin Fire Department were deployed for this job and were able to remove Nagini from the confined space by disassembling the cabinet. The six-foot-long boa constrictor was finally released after struggling for 12 hours.

The Herrin Fire Department posted about this unique incident on Facebook. In its post, the department credited firefighters Lamb and Blake for the successful rescue. Commenting on this post, a Facebook user wrote: “I heard 37 firefighters quit today on this call (just kidding, but seriously…).” Another joked: “Voldemort leaves his snake in some random places now (If you know, you know)!”

After the rescue of her pet, the owner of the snake Lorelei Hills told Kfvs12: “I am so incredibly grateful to the Herrin Fire Department as I would like to scream, they are amazing,” said Hills. “I wasn’t sure if it would help. or if I would be charged or not, but they came, they were super vigilant, they were very calm – which I felt kept me calm.”

Boa constrictors are large, but non-venomous, snakes that are kept as pets. Even animal rights activists have repeatedly called not to keep snakes as pets, as they are solitary creatures that do not like to be held by humans. In addition, they need a lot of space to move; therefore they suffer in restricted enclosures or terrariums.

This is not the only case where a snake has escaped its terrarium. In January, a harmless corn snake at the Walden School in Louisville in the US was found in the school’s science lab by a student.

The snake, named Gummy Worm, went missing three months ago in September. It was returned to its enclosure. Max Haupt, the science professor who was responsible for the reptile told UPI News that the snake could have escaped because the terrarium was not closed properly.
