Europe’s travel strikes: Flight and train disruption you can expect in April

Strikes are a regular occurrence in Europe, as employees hold back their jobs to fight for better pay and conditions.

Walkouts are sometimes planned months in advance, but others are announced at the last minute, which shows that it always pays to check before you travel.

The United Kingdom: the trains were in April

While there is no national train strike planned in the UK, various localized actions are planned for April.

On Saturday April 13, industrial action by the RMT union will impact CrossCountry services. Yes April 15-20, ASLEF union strikes affect Northern rail services. And us April 20an ASLEF outage has an impact on LNER trains.

On the London Underground, customer service staff will go April 10-11which may force some stations to close.

Heathrow Border Force strike called off

A planned strike at London Heathrow Airport from April 11 to 14 has been called off to allow time for negotiations.

If the dispute over working conditions is not resolved, further strike announcements are expected.

Italy: Transport strike announced in April

Two of the largest Italian unions have announced a strike Thursday, April 11 which will hit the railway and other public transport.

The fallout over working conditions and taxes will be staged in various four-hour windows in cities across the country. The staff of the public railway company Ferrovie dello Stato – which includes Trenitalia – will strike from 9am to 1pm.

France: Can the strikes reach the Paris Olympics?

CGT-RATP trade unionists have announced a 7-month strike notice from February 5 to September 9 that could affect the Île-de-France bus and metro network – including during the Summer Olympics.

However, the French Senate adopted a bill on April 9 to authorize the state to prohibit transport strikes for set periods each year to avoid disruption during major events such as Paris 2024. Call even more advance notice of strikes and the increase of minimum service obligations.

The bill faces opposition and must be passed by the French National Assembly before it becomes law.

Workers at the state’s public transport company say they are going without pay.

Germany: Threat of various attacks ends

On March 25, Deutsche Bahn reached a agreement with Germany’s GDL train drivers’ union, ending five months of negotiations and strikes.

The deal means GDL will refrain from strikes until at least February 2026.

The German Greens union also called off strikes at several German airports after reaching a payment agreement.
