Efforts continue to prevent pet abandonment in N.Y.

Animal shelters across New York state are full. Shelters say part of the reason is an increase in animal abandonment.

Sweetie Pie was found outside on her own and is now up for adoption at Lollypop Farm Humane Society of Greater Rochester.

What you need to know

  • There is an effort to prevent animal abandonment and keep dogs with their families during the increase in reported incidents
  • Lollypop Farm offers help and guidance
  • If a pet must be surrendered, it must be done legally, in person with a humane society, a shelter or a certified rescue group.

Law enforcement in Lollypop is not sure if Sweetie Pie has been abandoned as two of her friends are still staying there for now. They were found in a crate outside a local veterinary hospital.

“We have a lot more animals dumped in places as well as here,” said Lollypop Farm Vice President of Law Enforcement Reno DiDomenico. “We have a lot of animals dumped here too. So it’s a community thing.”

It also says that the dogs were left outside a veterinary office is still illegal.

“Whether it’s here or out in the general public, it’s a misdemeanor to leave an animal unattended somewhere,” DiDomenico said. “Even if they brought the animal here, it’s a crime, especially if it’s after hours. You need to give that animal to someone who is competent or at least let someone know that you left that animal in his care.”

Lollypop Farm says there are many reasons why pet owners give up their pets.

“But there are a lot of resources,” said Ashley Zeh, Lollypop Farm’s Director of Communications. “So if you are in trouble, if you find it a challenge to have a pet because there will always be one or two bumps in the animal. road and some are bigger than others and we are here to help.”

Organizations, including Lollypop Farm, offer many options to help keep your beloved pet if you are having difficulty.

“Our admissions department, they do one-on-one consultations, they help people try to keep their pet whenever possible,” said Zeh. “Our pet pantry has given away 20,000 pounds of food this year alone. So if it’s financial assistance, we’re here. If it’s a real emergency, you know we’re here for that, too.”

If you have to give up your dog – there is a safe and legal way.

“So the legal way would be to contact either Lollypop Farm or another local shelter for a New York State certified rescue, tell them you want to surrender their animal,” DiDomenico said.

“So it’s really important to work with us so we can help you,” Zeh said.

And it’s better for your dog. Lollypop says the two dogs are abandoned and Sweetie Pie is fine.
