Clement Valla: Macao Pointcloud Garden – Announcements

The care of I’m Man Lam, Macau Pointcloud Garden by the French-American artist Clement Valla is on view as part of Art Macao: Macao International Art Biennale 2023, presented by the Cultural Affairs Office of the Macao Special Administrative Region. One of six public art installations featured in this year’s Art Macao, this new media installation is on display until December 10, 2023, accompanied by a series of free public programming.

Derived from Valla Pointcloud Garden series and debuted as a site-specific outdoor public artwork in the recently revitalized The former Iec Long firecracker factory, Macau Pointcloud Garden develops an intriguing landscape of technology-generated moving images. Compared to the natural vegetation in situ, the work brings the digital image and nature into sharp contrast, presenting a new way of experiencing nature.

Macau Pointcloud Garden-a series of two works-comprising a collection of 3D scanned point data representing Macau’s diverse flora and enchanting gardens. To create the installation, Valla researched the botanical history of the city and meticulously identified significant cultural plants and gardens. Starting with 3D scans of gardens and collecting the point data generated from the scans, Valla created digital landscapes of gardens and plants in point data, a set of data points in a 3D coordinate system through the data analysis and reconstruction. The display consists of moving images that are intentionally pixelated and low-resolution but vivid and colorful, evoking an ambiguous sense of scale and space and prompting the viewers’ individual imaginations.

At the entrance to the Old Pettardi Factory Iec Long, visitors first meet Garden of the Windwhere two towering LED screens stand in the middle of a cluster of ficus rumphii, also known as “heart leaf banyan”. The piece poses a strong contrast between the natural world perceived by human vision and by computer lenses and sensors. As visitors venture further into the Factory, they encounter Transparent Garden– a hidden, semi-transparent screen harmoniously integrated into the lush and secret garden between the abandoned workshops.

Intended to be slow, calm and peaceful, the images invoke a serene atmosphere reminiscent of Hamorebi, referring to light filtering through rustling leaves in Japanese, offering a change of pace from the fast pace of scroll culture. By creating these screen-based portraits of nature, Valla invites the audience to reflect on our intensified screen lives and contemplate the emotional experiences of being on a screen versus being in nature.

“Macao has long served as a source of inspiration for artists who immerse themselves in its vibrant atmosphere. It is my aspiration to show how our city can follow the lead of artists and invest in their processes creatives, supporting artistic experiments that inspire transformative experiences and stimulate civic engagement,” said the curator. Sio Man Lam. “This year Macao Art explores the intersection of technology and spirituality, and I’m excited about the contemplative moments that Clement’s work will create as viewers reflect on everyday encounters with technology and nature, starting a dialogue with the Macao’s urban areas, cultural heritage and natural history. Furthermore, I look forward to Clement’s work to ignite fresh ideas and values while contributing to the advancement of Macau.”

With a socially engaged approach, Lam will collaborate with local art and environmental professionals to present a series of free events during the public art exhibition, advocating for communities that celebrate and promote Macao’s cultural and natural heritage.

This exhibition is recommended by the Social Affairs and Culture of the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region and organized by the Office of Cultural Affairs.
