Bike lanes have failed Baltimore

Letter writer Patrick Lynch is correct that Baltimore’s new bike lanes aren’t being used (“Find alternative uses for city cycle lanes”, January 23). The number of bike commuters is minuscule in major cities, so dedicating precious car lanes or parking for such is a real waste – and I already know how annoyed those few cyclists will be if they read this.

Many cities try to discourage car use by removing traffic lanes and replacing them with bike lanes, a form of so-called “traffic calming”. It simply doesn’t work. The public transport system in most cities – New York is the main exception – is completely inadequate to replace the automobile.

The primary mode of transportation in the United States is the automobile, and trying to force citizens to abandon them, removing parking lots and travel lanes only worsens things in terms of access to transportation or convenience, or even the desire to enter the city. everyone Remember the old adage: Never try to teach a pig to sing because first, it’s impossible and second, it really annoys the pig.
