CINCINNATI – The best players of the Browns did not leave the sideline, standing in the famous orange overalls. Jeff Driskel started at quarterback nine days after being signed. The priority was to pass the game as healthy as possible.
The regular season finale had a preseason feel, as the outcome had no playoff implications.
Bengals 31, Browns 14.
The Bengals (9-8) played their starters Sunday at Paycor Stadium, running back Joe Mixon had rushing and receiving touchdowns in the first quarter and receiver Andrei Iosivas had two touchdown catches. They were eliminated from playoff contention with a loss last week.
The Browns’ backups struggled to get anything going on offense and gave up big plays on defense when they didn’t jump on offense. The Browns (11-5) had zero net yards in the first quarter, and Driskel heated up in the fourth quarter to finish 13-for-26 for 167 yards, two touchdowns, two interceptions, three sacks and a 64.1 rating.
This game will soon be forgotten, and the intensity is about to hit another level.
The Browns return to Houston for the second time in four weeks.
The Texans (10-7) won the AFC South with a win over the Colts on Saturday night and a loss to the Jaguars on Sunday in Tennessee. The Texans will host the Browns in the wild card round of the playoffs next weekend. The Browns were already locked in as the top wild card and the No. 5 seed.
The day and time of the matchup will be announced later on Sunday.
On Dec. 24 in Houston, the Browns led 36-7 early in the fourth quarter before winning 36-22. The result comes with a substantial footnote: Texans standout rookie quarterback CJ Stroud did not play due to a concussion.
Stroud, the No. 2 pick out of Ohio State, was an early MVP candidate and in 15 games completed 63.9 percent for 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns, five interceptions and a 100.8 passer rating. In the win-or-go-home 23-19 victory over the Colts on Saturday he was 20-for-26 (76.9 percent) for 264 yards, two touchdowns and a 134.1 rating.
With Stroud and rookie coach DeMeco Ryans, the Texans went from 3-13-1 last year to division champions.
In Cleveland’s Christmas Eve win, Flacco went 27-for-42 for 368 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions and a 96.1 rating. Receiver Amari Cooper had a career day, catching 11 passes for a franchise-record 265 yards and two touchdowns despite injuring his heel on his second catch.
The Browns are playing in the postseason for just the third time since returning to the league in 1999 – 2002, 2020.
The Browns had a chance Sunday to tie the 1986 team with a franchise-best 12 wins and go 4-2 in the AFC North for the first time in 22 years. They were more concerned with keeping as many players healthy as possible.
That didn’t happen entirely.
Notable new injuries were to freshman Cedric Tillman, the No. 3 receiver, starting defensive tackle Shelby Harris and No. 3 return/kickoff returner Pierre Strong Jr.
Tillman was evaluated for a concussion after leaving in the fourth quarter. He took a big hit after making a catch and landed on his back before sitting up and walking unsteadily with the help of medical staff. He went to the locker room after being checked in the medical store. He had three catches for 43 yards.
Harris left late in the second quarter with a shin injury. His return was announced as questionable, but he did not play again.
Strong limped off the field in the fourth quarter with a back injury and was carried into the locker room on a cart. He rushed 14 times for 65 yards.
Driskel became the fifth franchise-record quarterback to start a game for the Browns this season, but they didn’t become the first team to win five games and make the playoffs.
Driskel, who was signed Dec. 29 off Arizona’s practice squad, had a brutal Browns debut. His first pass was intercepted and he was under a fair amount of pressure from the Bengal defense throughout the game.
He made a big throw to end the shutout with 8:45 left in the game, dropping a 31-yard touchdown into the arms of receiver David Bell behind coverage. He found Bell again for a 24-yard touchdown.
Quarterback Joe Flacco, who is 4-1 as the starter since joining the Browns, warmed up and took a seat on the bench when the game began. He was joined by most of the key contributors.
It is faster to name those who have played.
Starting running back Jerome Ford entered the second quarter and rushed three times for 6 yards. Right tackle James Hudson III and left tackle Geron Christian played, and receiver Elijah Moore was part of a rotation 10 days after a scary concussion in the win over the Jets.
On defense, tackles Jordan Elliott and Harris and safeties Ronnie Hickman and D’Anthony Bell started. End Ogbo Okoronkwo was part of the rotation after missing three games with a torn pectoral. He said during the week that he wanted to knock off the rust before the playoffs. He played with a tool on his left arm.
Highlights were rare for the Browns.
Anthony Bell made an athletic interception in the first quarter. He reached behind him to tip the ball forward with his left hand, tipping it again as it went to ground and corralling it.
Punter Corey Bojorquez returned after missing a game with a quadriceps injury and pinned the Bengals at the 5-yard line twice. The Bengals went 99 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter after one of them.
It was that kind of day.
And nobody cares.
