Abilene’s Garden World shares fire safety tips as holiday season arrives | KTAB

ABILENE, TXKTAB/KRBC)- The smell of pine, holiday decorations, and lots of Christmas trees is a sight that Keira McMillan has seen right after Thanksgiving for as long as she can remember because for her – shopping for a Christmas tree means the beginning of the holiday season.

“It’s just the three of us. Me and my mom and dad, and we’re going to put the ornaments in little buckets, and then we’re going to take the buckets and put them on the Christmas tree, but of course, you have to make the lights first,” he said. McMillan.

McMillan is not alone. In fact, Garden World CEO Todd Hooper is gearing up for a busy holiday season. He ordered 500 Christmas trees from nearly 2,000 miles away in Morgan, Oregon.

“All the trees are filled with about two tons of ice when they get here. It’s a four-day trip from Morgan to here, and then we load them right off the truck, and we water them three or four times a day just to keep cooler,” Hooper said.

He shared that this year, the prices did not increase, but it was a little more expensive to bring the trees to Abilene.

“But the thing that takes us the most is getting it out there from Morgan, so the cost of transportation is probably the most expensive,” Hooper explained.

He added that it is never too early to put up the Christmas tree.

“We get this question all the time and the faster you get it, the less you get what you want,” shared Hooper.

Tree lots are expected to sell quickly this year.

“Toward the end of the season, they start to get a little less full. The selection isn’t as good, so the faster you pick one and set it up, the better it will be,” Hooper said.

Hooper encourages those who use lights to take fire prevention measures.

“You want to keep it away from the fire and the space heater. They make a tree preserver that we sell here that keeps the needles in a little bit longer, but it’s really important to keep your bowl full once you’ve set it up your tree,” Hooper stressed.

Hooper’s goal is to make sure families like McMillan’s can have a fun and safe start to the holiday season. It is recommended to use a preservative when buying a tree to guarantee that it remains fresh and lasts until January.
