A338 temporary lights drive customers away from pet business

Animal Avenue says the lights have been issued because of the dangerous drivers they hope to cut off traffic.

Owners Jacob Clark, 21, and Rose Rowe, 22, opened two months ago and say the lights have decimated their community that was just starting to build.

“We’ve had a lot of customers complaining about people using it [the layby] like a race cut at traffic lights, so it was really dangerous.

“We had one customer specifically who heard that two SUVs almost caused a serious collision with her as she was trying to pull into a parking spot.

“They made him feel like he was wrong and then he didn’t feel like he could come in.”

Their first business, Rose and Jacob took over the pet store in the same place after being fired.

They were initially excited by the prospect of success, but say the traffic lights began to make them doubt their business.

Rose said: “We’ve only been open two months and it’s been crucified. We’ve built so much just to have nobody.

“It made us doubt ourselves, doubt what we are doing. We try to adapt to it, but it just drives people away because no one wants to wait in the long line.”

They both live nearby in Verwood, but say it takes an hour to get to work.

Supposed to end on April 10, the works were continued, which made the couple worried that no end date is in place.

An SGN spokesman said: “We completed urgent repairs to the gas mains along the A338 Salisbury Road yesterday afternoon.

“This has allowed us to remove temporary lights in place for everyone’s safety and to manage the flow of traffic around our work site.”

“We appreciate that roadworks can be frustrating for road users, residents and businesses, and we thank the local community for their patience while we carry out this essential work to ensure a safe and reliable gas supply is delivered to and neighboring properties”.
