14 injured in Bronx blaze where firefighters found e-bike

One person was left hanging on for life Sunday after a fire tore through a Bronx apartment building where firefighters spotted an electric bicycle, officials said.

The fire broke out on the 10th floor of a skyscraper in the Bronx River Houses complex Bronx River Ave. near the Cross Bronx Expressway in Soundview just after 7 p.m., they added.

Firefighters responding to the apartment noticed a e-bike near the front door before they discovered an unresponsive person inside and took the individual to an area hospital in critical condition.

Medics took four other people to area hospitals and nine more were treated at the scene, an FDNY spokesman said.

It took 78 firefighters from 20 different units to put out the flames, which were brought under control by 8:35 p.m.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation late Sunday evening.

As of Nov. 20, the city’s fire department had recorded 243 fires, 124 injuries and 17 deaths so far this year related to highly flammable lithium-ion batteries, the Daily News previously reported.

In light of an alarming increase in fires blamed on lithium-ion batteries, legislation recently proposed in Albany would require e-bike owners who sell e-bikes to enhance fire safety precautions, The News said last week.
