Screening of “Double bill” with a documentary film and a fiction film as part of the Rendez-vous aux jardins.

Taming the garden

Documentary by Salomé Jashi (Switzerland, Germany, Georgia, Netherlands, 2021, 92 min).

A powerful man, who is also the former prime minister of Georgia, buys centuries-old trees. His men uproot them, some reaching the height of a 15-story building, and take them to his private garden: through villages, hills and across the Black Sea. To achieve this, more trees must be cut down, electric cables moved and new roads paved through the tangerine plantations. The film takes the concept of uprooting from its metaphorical meaning to an oppressive, tangible and even surreal reality. An ode to the rivalry between men and nature.

Until the sun goes down

Drama by Philippe Petit with Swann Arlaud, Sarah Adler, Grégoire Oestermann (France, 2023, 85 min)

Max does not dream of making green walls for five-star hotels. A tenacious landscaper, committed but abbreviated, fights to create a wild garden, without fences, in the city center of a metropolis: a vegetable area open to all. After years of rejection, his project reached the final of an architectural competition. For Max, it is the last chance to offer oxygen to the residents who are suffocating in an urban hell, under the beating sun.
